Energy Saving Light Bulbs

In line with our home energy theme this month, we wanted to talk about light bulbs.

If you have many incandescent lights in your home, you could be paying for it as they convert around 10% of the energy they consume for lighting. Essentially, this means that the remaining 90% is just used for heat. As we spend around 10% of our budget on lighting, this is significant.

Nowadays, there is huge investments in lighting so you will find options like compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which will reduce your energy usage on lighting by up to 75%. Furthermore, there are also options for controls so that lights aren't on when nobody is there to see the benefit. Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, CFLs are known to last up to ten times longer. What’s more, LEDs consume even less energy and can last even longer than CFLs. Finally, LEDs contain no mercury while CFLs do.

We are going to show that it doesn’t have to be difficult to save money on your bills by showing you some better ways to cool and heat your house. According to recent reports, around half of all energy can be attributed to these tasks, so here is how you can reduce your energy bills;

  • Make sure all HVAC filters are clean and can work efficiently.
  • Replace your air conditioning system with a simple celling fan.
  • Install a thermostat that can be programmed so appliances will be adjusted when no one is home or at night. As well as containing no mercury, programmable thermostats are thought to save an average household up to $150 every single year.
  • Ensure that the thermostat is working efficiently, as described above. If there is no-one at home, there is no need for the heating to be on. Did you know that a five degree (Fahrenheit) decrease in the thermostat can save 10% on your energy bill?
  • Invest in a pellet or wood stove as these are far better than furnaces.
  • As simple as it may sound, draw the curtains at night as this will keep the warmth inside.
