We are all aware of the ongoing wildfires this year, which has led to so much loss of property and homes, not to mention life. What can we do to aid with the protection of our homes from the spread of fires?

One way is Defensible Space. This is when the surroundings of a home or building are prepared in such a way that make it much harder for a wildfire to spread and destroy the home.

How does Defensible Space help to protect a building?

Perhaps one of the most important ways is that it allows fire trucks to be able to gain access to the area. This enables firefighters to have the best chance of saving the building because they are right there at the site.

For a Defensible Space to be effective, it must be properly cared for. This means it will not have areas of vegetation or materials that provide fuel for a fire, making it spread rapidly. A fire will become weak and much easier for firefighters to take care of if it has nothing to burn.

If you live in an area with a pond or other body of water, keeping the surrounding area of it is cleared of trees etc. will enable the fire department to gain easy access to it, saving very valuable time.

Of course, depending on where you live will determine what kind of requirements exist regarding Defensible Space. It is a good idea to check with the local authorities before starting anything that could endanger wildlife etc.
